Seawolves, Certified: Building Career-Ready AI Skills at Sonoma State
How Sonoma State University's TRIO Talent Search program equipped 6th through 12th grade students with real, resume-worthy AI skills, and measured the growth every step of the way.
Nearly half of students had barely touched AI
When Sonoma State University's TRIO Talent Search team partnered with AI Essentials, they knew their first-generation, college-bound middle and high schoolers would be entering a world where AI fluency is as fundamental as writing a resume. But the baseline data told a clear story: 48% of students rarely or never used AI tools for school, and only 48% could correctly explain what an AI "hallucination" is. Forty percent simply answered "not sure."
These students weren't behind. They just hadn't been given a structured, safe way to learn. That's exactly what the partnership set out to change.
A journey from the classroom to the career
Demystifying AI & Practicing Responsible Use
Before students used AI to study or build anything, they learned what it actually is: how it works, where it fails, and where the ethical lines sit. This foundation of trust and judgment is what made every step that followed possible.
AI for Academics
Next, students brought that judgment into school. Through hands-on, simulation-based lessons, they learned to use AI as a study partner rather than a shortcut, building skills across every core subject.
AI Across Industries
Then the lens widened. Students explored how AI is reshaping the careers they'll actually enter, completing industry-specific certification tracks that showed them real tools, real workflows, and real judgment calls professionals face every day.
Capstone Projects → Resume Skills
Each certification track ended with a capstone project: a tangible piece of work students can point to on a resume, in a scholarship essay, or in their first internship interview. Not "I learned about AI," but "here's what I built with it."
Every measure improved. Every single one.
We don't ask partners to take our word for it. Every AI Essentials engagement is bookended by pre- and post-assessments, and at Sonoma State the results were unambiguous: all ten measured skill and confidence areas improved, with the biggest gains landing exactly where TRIO's mission lives: college and career readiness.

In their own words
Before this workshop I had been told my whole life that AI is taking over jobs. This program showed me that's an exaggeration, and there are so many career opportunities AI can't replace.
Talent Search Student, Post-Assessment
Measured like it matters, because it does
TRIO programs report outcomes. So do we. Every AI Essentials partnership is built around evidence from day one, so program directors have grant-ready data instead of anecdotes when it's time for the APR.
Pre-Assessment Baseline
Every student completed a kickoff assessment measuring AI usage habits, conceptual understanding, and self-rated confidence across ten skill areas, establishing exactly where the cohort started.
Post-Assessment Growth
The same measures, repeated after training, plus open-ended reflection on what students learned and how they'll apply it. The result: quantified growth on every dimension, with qualitative evidence to match.
