AI Will Be a Ladder or a Gate.
NJIT Chose Ladder.

How the nation's #1 university for upward mobility put AI literacy in the hands of the students New Jersey's AI future depends on.

#1 Nationally for Student Upward Economic Mobility

That banner hangs over the Campus Center at New Jersey Institute of Technology, and it is not a marketing slogan. Forbes ranked NJIT first in the nation for the share of students who start in the bottom fifth of the income distribution and end up in the top fifth. For more than half a century, this university in the heart of Newark has been one of America's most reliable engines for turning talent into opportunity.

Now a new question hangs over every institution that does this work. Artificial intelligence is reshaping what opportunity looks like, and it will do one of two things for students like these: lift them higher, or lock them out.

This July, NJIT's TRIO Talent Search program answered it the way NJIT always has. They opened the door.

Chapter 01

Six Decades in the Making

The story of this summer's AI training did not start in 2026. It is the newest chapter in a much older one.

1968

The door opens

NJIT's Educational Opportunity Program begins its work: getting students traditionally underrepresented in STEM into rigorous technical degrees, and getting them through. Generations of first-generation students from Newark and beyond walk through that door.

2018

The results are undeniable

Forbes ranks NJIT #1 in the country for upward economic mobility. The formula is not a mystery: meet students where they are, hold the bar high, and surround them with support. Programs like TRIO Talent Search carry that formula into Newark's high schools.

2025

New Jersey bets on AI

The NJ AI Hub opens, founded by Princeton University, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, Microsoft, and CoreWeave, with a stated mission of building an inclusive AI economy that connects innovation to workforce development and education across the state. The vision is bold. The open question is who gets to participate in it.

JULY 2026

Talent Search answers the question

NJIT's students completed the AI for Academic Success kickoff training with AI Essentials. In a single intensive session, they move from casual AI users to something rarer: young people who understand what AI can do, what it cannot, and how to use it with judgment.

NEXT

The ladder extends

These students head toward college applications, scholarships, and first internships carrying a skill set the state's own AI strategy says the future workforce needs. The mobility machine keeps running. It just learned a new trick.

Chapter 02

A Cohort That Kept Us Honest

Here is what makes this group remarkable: they did not arrive as blank slates. These are Newark-area students at a technology-focused university's college access program, and it showed. Seventy-seven percent could already correctly define an AI hallucination before the training began, a baseline well above what we typically see.

But experience is not the same as judgment. One in six students believed AI tools are best at "always giving correct answers," which is exactly the misconception that gets students in trouble with college coursework, applications, and financial aid research. And when asked to name the biggest risk of using AI for schoolwork, seventy percent said the same thing: becoming too dependent on it.

Read that again. Before anyone taught them a thing, these students' number one worry about AI was that it might weaken them. That is not cynicism. That is wisdom looking for a framework.

The training gave them one: AI as a thinking partner, never a replacement. Practice asking better questions. Practice catching AI's mistakes. Practice knowing when not to use it at all.

Chapter 03

The State's Vision, in Their Words

New Jersey's leaders talk about the AI economy in policy language. The students who will live in that economy talk about it differently. Put the two side by side, and you can see the vision becoming real.

The State

The NJ AI Hub works to connect AI innovation with workforce development, education, and economic opportunity, helping ensure that advances in AI benefit communities across New Jersey.

The State

Expanding access to AI opportunity means expanding access to AI skills and accelerating applied learning across the state.

Chapter 04

What the Numbers Say

Every one of the seven skill and confidence measures we tracked improved from pre-training to post-training. The largest gains came in exactly the skills that turn AI from a shortcut into a capability.

100% of post-assessment respondents said the program increased their confidence using AI responsibly*
+25% growth in asking AI questions that get useful, accurate responses
4.6/5 final confidence score for using AI to study effectively
100% tracked skill and confidence areas improved, with no exceptions

And here is the detail we love most. When asked which skill they improved the most, the single top answer from these students was not writing help or study shortcuts. It was understanding responsible and ethical AI use. A cohort of tech-savvy teenagers, given every tool to move faster, chose to name integrity as their biggest win.

"AI can be dangerous if not used responsibly."

The state of New Jersey is building an inclusive AI economy. On a July afternoon in Newark, over 90 Talent Search students showed what its foundation looks like: not just students who can use AI, but students who can be trusted with it.

The next chapter of the mobility story is being written in AI
