Building the Workforce Early: Harris-Stowe Students Earn AI Certifications Before Their First Job
How students at one of St. Louis's most mission-driven universities earn industry-aligned AI certifications and see their future careers a little more clearly.
A University Built on Opening Doors
Harris-Stowe State University has spent more than 165 years doing one thing exceptionally well: creating opportunity. As a historically Black university in the heart of St. Louis, Harris-Stowe serves a student body where many are the first in their families to attend college, students carrying the hopes of entire households onto campus with them.
That mission is exactly why AI readiness matters here. First-generation students don't just need to know that AI exists. They need the skills, the judgment, and the credentials to walk into a college classroom, an internship, or a first job already knowing how to use the tools that professionals use every day. That's why Harris-Stowe partners with AI Essentials to make it happen.
Five Careers. Five Certifications. Real Tools.
Students worked through AI Essentials certification coursework spanning five professional tracks: Healthcare, Business, Technology, Law, and Investing. Each track ends in an interactive capstone simulation where students step into a real workplace scenario and use AI the way working professionals do: to analyze, draft, check, and build something of value.
The result is a double win for every resume: the skillset and the certificate that proves it.
Healthcare
Students step into a community health clinic simulation, using AI to support patient communication and care coordination, while learning where human judgment must lead.
Business
Students use AI to draft professional communications, analyze scenarios, and make workplace decisions the way modern teams actually operate.
Technology
Students explore how AI is built, where it fails, and how tech professionals evaluate AI output before trusting it.
Law
Students apply AI to legal research and drafting scenarios, learning why accuracy, ethics, and verification are non-negotiable in the legal profession.
Investing
Students use AI to research, compare, and communicate financial ideas, building analytical habits that translate to any career touching money.

Learning by Doing, Every Single Day
What made this program stick wasn't lectures. After each lesson, Harris-Stowe's program staff turned the curriculum into hands-on practice, so students exercised every skill the same day they learned it:
Prompt writing that works. Students wrote their own detailed prompts, ran them through ChatGPT, and discovered firsthand how the quality of the question shapes the quality of the answer.
AI ethics in practice. Students summarized AI answers in their own words, learning that AI supports their thinking, it doesn't replace it.
Writing with integrity. Students wrote their own paragraphs and used AI only for grammar, keeping their voice, their ideas, and their honesty intact.
Meeting Their Future Selves
On the final day, students did something unforgettable. Each student submitted a photo of themselves and wrote a prompt describing the career they dream about. Then AI showed them the picture: themselves as lawyers, doctors, counselors, and more.
"By submitting a photo of themselves and creating a prompt of what career they wanted to be in, ChatGPT created the students as lawyers, doctors, counselors and more... The students really seemed to have loved the curriculum."Alana McNeely, M.Ed., TRIO Program Advisor
For first-generation college students, that image isn't a party trick. It's a preview. The certification tells employers what they can do. That picture tells students who they can become.
In Their Own Words
Asked what they found most valuable, students didn't name shortcuts. They named judgment, the harder half of AI literacy.
"AI is a tool for studying. You shouldn't use AI to just get answers. Also make sure to cross-check, as AI can get things wrong."
"It taught me that AI can be used ethically, and it can help when studying or cleaning up essays."
"I've learned how to research schools and future careers I can take according to my interests."
"It will help me understand what and what not to share with AI, and the results."
Workforce Development That Starts Before the Workforce
Every student left this program with more than knowledge. They left with industry-aligned certificates for their resumes, hands-on experience with the AI tools professionals use today, and increased confidence in using AI responsibly and effectively. Every single one of them.
Two-thirds of students named "building skills for a future internship or job" among their biggest gains, and students connected AI to scholarship searches, college research, and career exploration without ever being prompted to. That's career readiness taking root, exactly where it should, exactly when it should.
